There are 20 listening pages in this activity.
EARS: In activity A, students first listen to a musical phrase then try to match what they've just heard to what they see. There are three written choices.
EYES: In activity B, students observe a written musical phrase and then try to match what they see to what they hear. There are three listening choices.
FUN: Each choice is linked to a funny response. If the student makes a correct answer, they earn the "Reward" comment.
BRAIN BREAK: There are three different whole-class brain breaks built into this activity. Students are given instructions and a linked musical prompt is attached to each page. They have 25-30 seconds to complete the task and get back to work.
This student-tested listening activity is a favorite of my students!!! They love the comments and beam with delight during the brain break activities. Although it is a great activity for a substitute teacher, it really is too much fun to miss.
Suggestion: Depending on the age of your students, you may consider having the student use the highlighting pen or magical pen to trace the melodic shape of the phrase before listening.
Extension: Every melodic phrase has a linked sound. On a different day, have children face AWAY from the SMARTBoard while you or a student touch different examples. Have the children try to guess which one they hear.
