Who doesn't love some fun, simple Reader's Theatre! Reader's Theatre is a great way to practice fluency and build reading confidence in students. Sprinkle in some music and you have a super simple activity that your students will eat up!
This reader’s theatre script is based on two authentic Native American legends: How the Owl Was Made and The Young Brave and Healing Waters. I recommend using this script with students in 4th grade and up.
This script has 10 individual speaking parts and a chorus. The chorus can be made up of any number of students that aren’t assigned a speaking part or can include everyone.
With younger students, I recommend reviewing the script with them before beginning in order to familiarize them with any new vocabulary.
This script includes 4 short songs sung by the chorus. The songs are sung to tunes that most students will be at least somewhat familiar with. The song paradies are based on the original songs Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson, The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens, Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, and A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman. The words have been changed, so I recommend singing the songs with their new lyrics as a group once or twice before beginning. To add an extra element of fun and help students with the tunes, I pulled up the karaoke versions of the original songs on Youtube so that we could sing along to the instrumental music but that isn’t necessary.
Enjoy! And be sure to check back often with Miss Music Makes Magic for more musical reader’s theatre!
