Need a quick, simple way to review or teach rhythms to your students? Soda Pop rhythms is a fun, creative way to get students thinking rhythmically using everyday items they know to create a memory device that will stay with students long after the lesson ends. This file includes a pdf with rhythms that match up to a soda. For instance a quarter note is clapped like you would clap the number of syllables in the word Sprite or Coke. There are multiple options for each rhythm and you as a class can decide which soda you prefer to help you clap. After each rhythm is introduced students put them into use by clapping simple 4 beat, 2 measure rhythms to practice what they have learned. This also pairs well with Kodaly rhythms. Along with the PDF Slides to guide students along there are 3 worksheets that go with the lesson where students are to write the correct rhythm that matches up to the sodas and vice versa. There is also an opportunity for students to compose their own soda pop rhythms. This lesson has become a class favorite year after year and has so many versatile possibilities. I have also added my own empty bottles of soda as manipulative to aid in the composition of rhythms which is a huge hit with my students.
