This assignment can be useful in a novel study or short story unit. The purpose of the assignment is for students to connect mood and music and allows them to use popular technology (YouTube).
Here is how I have prefaced the assignment to students: In most movies or television shows, there is a musical soundtrack that accompanies the dialogue, acting or events. Songs can include both orchestral music and songs performed by various musicians or bands. A soundtrack can emphasize the overall theme or mood, stress certain emotional cues, cue specific traits of a character's personality or connect multiple shots or scenes together. Your mission is to create a soundtrack for parts of [insert chosen short story or novel].
In order to facilitate the process, students are given a chart where they record parts from the novel or short story they found important, considered what the overall mood is for the event and choose a song that represents that mood. They must then justify their choice.
In the Preview File I have included a handout that I gave to students prior to introducing the assignment so they can become familiar with the connections between mood and music. I also had them listen to a few sample songs (for example, Jaws Theme Song) and consider what mood might be evoked from this song.
In terms of assessment, I included this as a media component. It could also be linked to listening skills.
