I think it's very important to hold students accountable for their work. I never assign anything that isn't necessary- I hate when students ask "will this be graded?" Uh, YES! I look at all your work, so you should always do your best!
I created this "must do" list as an easy way for me to collect papers. Each week, the students get a new list. They fill in the blank slots as the week progresses. The check boxes are for them to keep track of what they have completed. Students staple their work under their list as they finish it or as they get it. It's their responsibility to keep track of their work!
I collect the list everyday to put in their class dojo points at the bottom, and to make any notes regarding their work or corrections they need to make. This also allows me to keep mental note of who will be finishing all their must dos, and who I need to keep an eye on. All students are expected to finish all their must do's by Friday in order to go to Activity Time (they only have AT on Friday). No must do's? No AT!
I've seen second grade use a similar system, but their lists are usually pretty similar each week, with things filled out prior to passing out. (IE- Every week students need to finish word work). I have also seen this system used with Daily 5! There's just another table on the list where students check off their daily 5 activities.
