Let your students work out the effects of mutations themselves, by building their own mutated DNA and mRNA strands and then working out how the amino acids are affected. This is a great way to embed deep understanding of mutations and the effects they have on proteins. These Google Slides activities are clearly explained, with follow-up tasks like true or false and matching chromosomal mutations to pictures of these.

Animated answer slides are included so you can ask students for their thoughts before revealing the correct answer. Alternatively, you can easily upload the answers to Google Classroom for students to self-check their work.

There is a Google Forms Quiz to easily check student progress - it's self grading, so there's no extra work involved.

Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
