This scaffolded essay activity will make a great end to your My Brother Sam Is Dead unit. This product contains a graphic organizer that asks students to not only search for textual evidence within the novel, but also to explain each quotes significance. This product also contains a checklist and explanation for writing a CER essay (claim, evidence, reasoning) that can be used as an extension activity. The checklist contains sentence starters and tips for student success. It also aligns with the MLA format of citing textual evidence within a paragraph. I always begin with the graphic organizer on one day and then move to the essay on the next day. Students are always excited when they realize that they have already done half of the work! A rubric is also included for easy grading.
Note: This CER essay can also be easily edited to also include a counterclaim (9th-10th).
