This is a parent explanation letter for My Brother Sam is Dead. My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln and Christopher Collier is a widely challenged book, but is often recommended to be used in 5th grade curriculum to teach about the American Revolutionary War. When I use this book/novel with my 5th grade reading class, I first send home a parent letter explaining what the book is about and why I am using it in my classroom. The letter does not have to be signed and returned, but I give extra credit points for returning it signed. This letter is a way for me to cover myself if a problem does arise with the content of the book.
