This student engagement journal is meant as a companion to a class Read- a-Loud of the novel. It does NOT have comprehension questions or vocabulary to define. My approach to this type of reading is to rely heavily on the themes in the novel. When students make connections to these themes in their lives, real learning and excitement takes place. The students do the work. I act as a facilitator and a guide to this beautiful piece of historical fiction. Themes are: patriotism, coming of age, violence, war, lies and deceit, visions of America, courage, family, duty.
