I created this art lesson as a way for students to discover how their emotions can influence their visual art. And I also wanted students to see how they could communicate a story without saying a word.
When I showed students the sample art piece, I had them guess what the story behind it was all about. They loved the mystery of not knowing anything about the artist and still trying to figure out what had happened and how that person was feeling during that experience. They became artist detectives.
Through very hands on activities such as listening to a piece of music and identifying how it made them feel and discovering the influence of colors while playing the Color Charades game, students learned how to tell a visual story, by incorporating specific colors, symbols and details into their projects.
This was a great art study for grades 3+ and would make a good art therapy lesson as well.
