In this project, students get a chance to be an author and illustrator as they publish their very own book about their family!
For this project, each student will get an organizer to complete about their family. (page 2 of document) Each student will fill in all of the boxes that pertain to their family, and he/she can “x” out the boxes that they don’t need. For each box on the organizer, students will complete the sentences. (Ex. My brother is special because …., and then they will write their brother’s name to complete the next sentence I love you, _____!) When students have completed the organizer, they can get on a computer and type all of the boxes that they have completed on their organizer. We work together to make the font larger and to divide all of our sentences into different pages. (Each box on the organizer will have its own page.) Next, we print out the pages, and students illustrate each page using crayons or colored pencils. When students have completed all illustrations, I usually have them choose a color for the background of their book. I then tape / glue their completed pages on the construction paper color that they chose and laminate each page. I then bind all of the pages together with a spiral book binder. Lastly, each student will get a chance to read his/her published book to the class before taking it home.
My students love this project, and their parents love receiving this very special book. :)
