Product Description
This packet of 5 writing exercises for My Father’s Dragon leads students through the process of collecting information from the text and writing about the text.

Teaching writing is easier for the teacher and writing is more engaging for the students when they have authentic material to write about. My Father’s Dragon by Ruthe Stiles Gannet is one such piece of material. It’s an easy to read fantasy book about a little boy on an island of dangerous talking animals.

This packet contains five writing assignments covering the types of writing in the Common Core for grade 3: description, narrative, opinion, and informative. Because of the recursive nature of the Common Core standards, I can use it in my combined 2nd/3rd grade classroom, as the packet also meets the 2nd grade standards.

Each of the five writing assignments includes a pre-writing exercise to take notes from the text.

Then students are guided through the writing task. For example, “point of view” is explained with examples, before they are asked to write the story from the point of view of the little boy. The narrative assignments present different time words and how to employ them.

After finishing the writing, students are shown how to edit, sometimes by re-reading their own writing and sometimes by exchanging papers with a friend and editing that writing.
