My journal pages can be used as portfolio journal records to be kept or excellent stand alone printables to measure and assess student progress.
This page measures how students respond to a question about a favorite and also allow them to use beginning phonics to try and write the word. I would prompt them by saying “We have been talking about pets. What is your favorite pet?” Once a child states his/her favorite I would write down exactly what is said. Then I would have the student repeat the word and scaffold using additional sentences. "Can you write the word? What sound does it start with? What sounds do you hear?". This page will be reassessed throughout the year to measure progress.
