"My Friend Leonard" by James Frey is the sequel to "A Million Little Pieces," by James Frey. Again, this is a fictional memoir and must be read remembering that fact. This novel starts with Frey's release from jail, only to find his girlfriend from rehab has suicided, which sends James directly to a liquor store. It appears James is going to throw everything away, but contacts his friend Leonard, another treatment friend, who becomes James' benefactor. James takes one step forward and two backwards nearly every day which mirrors the REAL struggles a recovering addict experiences. It is one day at a time. James must handle adversity after adversity throughout the book, battle his depression and setbacks, but keeps going. His relationship with Leonard, in the end, benefits both James and Leonard. This is truly a moving and inspirational read that anyone who knows, has experienced treatment and recovery, or wants to know about it will love. My high school students LOVED, DEVOURED and DISCUSSED both of James Frey's memoirs. They also loved his 'unusual' writing style.
