You will need to get black construction paper and enough chalk for students in your class to use. Ideally you will be able to find a host of multi-coloured chalks. Ask the students to close their eyes and focus on visualizing the poem. Read the poem 2-3 times, and then ask the students to create, on the construction paper, whatever imagery came to them while the poem was being read. If students ask, feel free to re-read the poem to them. This can easily be finished in one art block. You can assess the students for use of the creative process, and the imagery used, instead of assessing “how good it is.”
It is likely you will get a wide array of creations. Many will focus on the literal, the fish, or the sun, but some students may create more abstract pieces of art. This is what makes this short activity so interesting.
