My Holiday Traditions Journal is a four page document containing three journal entries. The first looks at what holiday the student celebrates with their family. The second has the student interviewing a family member about holiday traditions when they were younger. The third is a chance to journal about traditional holiday food.
These activities are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for K-2 (Language Standards 1 and 2 and Writing 2 and 8). The second activity also is aligned with California Social Studies Standards K.6.3 1.4.3, and 2.1.2.
The four journal pages are in black and white to allow for easy copying and student coloring. Since the success of this project depends on examining family history, encourage family participation in filling out this journal. Depending on the skill level of the student allow for parents or family members to cowrite with their child if needed.
This should be a fun and special assignment. Perhaps even one that will be packed away with the family’s holiday decorations so it can be taken out and read the next year.
Wishing you a happy holiday season filled with old traditions and new!
