My Immigration Story grants students the opportunity to learn more about themselves, their ethnicity, and lineage while also forcing them to gather family stories. Students come from all walks of life and there is an option for all students.
If you find a student has been adopted or cannot gather this information for various reasons, I have often turned this into a simple oral history where they can gather information about what life was like for the oldest person they can interview, family member or not. As educators we must be flexible with the situations are students are in and use our best judgement to assist them. This can be very exciting for students who have immigrated here themselves, as they are often excited to share their stories.
This is an extremely powerful project and the submissions are well worth the time!
