This adaptation was developed to be used in addition to the New York State Module, Unit 1, on a 75 minute block schedule for 4 lessons. While I wish I could give you step-by-step instructions and analysis of the poem, please note that it was my intention to stay as close to the Module as I could. In fact, it was my objective for my own lesson preparations for this Unit to use these student study guide worksheets alongside the Module when helping students analyze the poem. Therefore, this is not a replacement or a complete overhaul to the Module. Some skills have been emphasized in a different way, and some parts of the Module, Unit 1 do not make an appearance in the student study worksheets at all. This is just a representation of how I would adapt the Module, Unit 1, especially given that students will be preparing to take the NYS Common Core Regents in English.
To further explain my reasoning behind this Unit, it is important to note that my personal teaching philosophy is not to teach by way of questioning. I do not feel that I teach best when I ask students leading questions, as the Module, Unit 1 is organized. This is why I created this adaptation. It is my hope that students use their skills to come up with their own questions to answer, rather than being provided questions from someone who already knows the poem. I decided to alter the module to provide students with steps to continuously refer to when reading poetry. The state’s Unit does a great job of developing skills on annotation and note-taking, but I felt it was better to give students the framework to be successful every time they read by providing better group activities, graphic organizers, verbal discussion aids, and writing assignments that are aligned with the state test.
This does not come with a teacher’s guide or complete poem analysis. I have included multiple choice answers and some snap shots of my own notes, but cannot provide you with an understanding of the poem just by including my notes. Please be sure to review the Module, Unit 1 closely, as well as other supplemental analysis or lesson plan ideas, when preparing for each lesson.
