Students need to think outside of themselves. by Margaret Ruur, students are challenged to contemplate geography, topography, among many other factors affecting how books are brought to children around the world.
As both a former 5th grade teacher and library media specialist, I strive to include this in the lessons I implement every day. I used this multi-part lesson as part of library and technology orientation with 4th graders but it may be used with grades 3 and up, and certainly would make a great reading or social studies classroom lesson. In this reading, research, and Google Earth cooperative group activity, students keep in mind 3 big questions: What might these countries with alternative methods of getting books have in common? What might be the author’s main reason for writing this book? What does this tell us about our world? Included is introductory slide, lesson progression guide, Google Earth note-taking page, and group research activity.
