Use this set of My Library Checkouts Bookmarks to help your students choose library books that serve three different purposes. Identify books in your collection that are good read alouds for parents to share with their students at home, and place "Read to Me" bookmarks inside. For emerging and newly independent readers, set aside those "easy reader" books and place "Read to You" bookmarks in those. And to preserve your young students' right to choose their own books of interest, give them the "My Choice" Book bookmark when they go through the checkout. Each bookmark lets parents know the purpose of that book and ways to interact with their child when he/she brings that book home. Especially if parents are "complaining" that their child is bringing home books that are "too hard" for anyone to read, that "My Choice" Book bookmark will let parents know it's okay for their child to check out those books and instead of reading, they can have valuable discussions about what's inside. Each bookmark comes on a separate page of three that you can reproduce and cut apart. Run off as many as you need and use throughout the year. It's a simple way to please parents, teachers, and allow students to maintain freedom of choice in library book selection.
