Music has become an essential part of life for many individuals. As we listen to it, our mind works through the feelings and scenarios the musician is telling us about. Writing music becomes a way for people to let out their emotions and work through problems that they are facing. For many, music is also an escape from reality. More than ever, we see music as an enduring part of our students day to day lives. With personal music players being integrated into phones and small hand held devices, youth are never far away from their music. Even if they do not have those devices, music is only a click away on the internet thanks to sites like YouTube.
What students and adults sometimes fail to realize is if you take away the fancy instrumentals, you are left with a piece of poetry. Music is, at the core, poetry put to a melody. This unit allows students to further explore the poetic devices and basic structure of poetry. It also allows students to analyze their favorite tracks and explore how those songs connect to their lives. As well, students will have a chance to create their own musical piece to express themselves and work through any situations they may be currently facing.
Included in this package is an 8 lesson summary, worksheets, word definitions as well as a poetry pre-test with key.
