This is a GREAT beginning of the year activity, but it is a project that can be done at anytime. It asks that the students write statements about their life with numbers as a key descriptor. You can use it for a beginning of the year activity, but you can also use it for a particular content review. For example, you could require students to use...
measures of central tendency
various rational numbers
...to describe themselves.
You can also use it as a pre/post assessment. Have them create one at the beginning of the year, and recreate it at the end of the year with more complicated numbers.
