Description

Do your students need extra practice with problem solving? These mini math journals will provide exposure and practice with a variety of problem solving structures and situations. In addition, 3 differentiated journals are included - each covering the same scenarios and structures but varied in difficulty. There are 20 problems included in each journal, 2 for each problem solving structure. In my classroom, we do the first problem together and the students try out the second problem independently.

Problem solving situations and structures include:
*Put Together/Total Unknown 5 + 6 = ?
*Add/Change Unknown 8 + ? = 12
*Compare/Difference Unknown 9 - ? = 3, 3 + ? = 9
*Add to/Start Unknown ? + 4 = 10
*Put Together/Both Addends Unknown ? + ? = 11
*Take From/Result Unknown 13—9 = ?
Compare, Bigger Unknown
Put Together, Addend Unknown 8 + ? = 16
Take From, Start Unknown ? - 7 = 9
Compare, Smaller Unknown

Journal A included addition/subtraction scenarios through 10, Journal B includes addition/subtraction scenarios through 18, and Journal C includes addition/subtraction scenarios with multiples of ten
