This is a fun homework or Parent Involvement Activity to use during a My Community unit or any time you are discussing neighborhoods. The child is asked to take a walk around his neighborhood and use the checklist to record all the common items one might encounter in a neighborhood. It could also be used as a whole group activity by taking the class for a walk around the school.
The information gathered can then be discussed and used in a Shared or Interactive Writing Experience, journal writing, the creation of a class book, a math activity (tallying up each item, counting, sorting, etc.), various art activities . . . the sky's the limit. A follow up activity could be to create a diorama of a neighborhood using the Scavenger Hunt findings to supply ideas for things to include.
Appropriate for grades Pre-K through high school.
