Weslandia by Paul Fleischman is a story about a young boy who creates a whole new civilization after a strange new plant begins to grow in his backyard.
Begin by reading Weslandia to your class. Discuss how Wesley changed and developed as the story progressed.
The Weslandia project is designed to help your students work together to develop a civilization of their own. Because of the size and scope of this project, Weslandia is a perfect group project.
The students will work together to create a new civilization. They will need to decide on the name of their new civilization and its location. Using the included graphic organizers, the groups will develop every aspect of their new civilization. They will describe the geography, agriculture, government, architecture, language, and culture (games, arts, legends).
After developing these key aspects, the students will work together to create a poster of their new civilization. A piece of poster board or tri-fold presentation board is ideal. Students will want to use paint, paper, and clay to create artifacts from their civilization. Some students may also want to create travel brochures and other items to showcase the new civilization.
Finally, an oral presentation will be done as a way to describing the uniqueness of the new civilization to the rest of the students.
This project is ideal for tying together all of the learning topics from the year. It also makes a great concluding activity at the end of the school year.
