Just in time for Native American Heritage Month and Thanksgiving, this song utilizes a Kiowa Native American lullaby to study La-Sol-Mi-Do and an Orff accompaniment on hand drums, soprano/alto xylophones, and bass xylophone. The lesson breaks each of the three parts into a brief study of ostinati patterns, starting with reading, then demonstrating them with body percussion, and finally all three parts come together on instruments. Your students will interact with rhythmic values including quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, syncopa, as well as quarter and half rests. This lesson is best suited for upper elementary, but it can easily be altered for primary students as well. Suggestions for doing so are included at the end of the lesson. Finally, you will also receive the sheet music for the piece. Enjoy!
