This 17-day unit is what I used for my 7th grade poetry unit. Basically, we go through some basic poetry terms and forms. There are examples of each form, and we touch on how to read poetry and do what I call commentary, but mostly we focus on various forms and writing them. Forms include riddle poem, diamante, villanelle, limerick, sonnet, extended metaphor, and free verse.
The unit ends with an assignment that asks students to invent their own form of poetry, using ideas from the different forms that we read. They write out their rules, an example of their form, and commentary on their poem. The kids love it! There is also a short test at the end.
As a bonus, I've included my "old" poetry materials that I either have since changed or did not have time to use.
The file is a .zip folder containing all my materials for this unit.
