This is an excellent way to get your students excited about studying rocks! The project was designed for 3rd graders but could easily work in 2nd-5th grade. I use the week-long homework project at the beginning of our Rocks and Minerals unit. Students find a "Pet Rock" and name it. They do different scientific tests on their rock (ie put it in vinegar, test hardiness with penny scratching), they use observation to write a descriptive paragraph and they create a scientific drawing of their rock. Finally, they get to decorate it any way they choose and bring it to school! I display them in a "Classroom Rock Museum" along with other rocks they've found. The file is EDITABLE.
