Students identify and applied what they've learned about poetry including the use of poetic devices, poem types, rhyming patterns, and theme. They also will produce a poem of their own applying these skills. Requiring students to annotate their poems allows them to show true understanding of the dominant poetic device. This packet, which is aligned with Common Core Standards for English, comes with specific instructions to guide students and a rubric to evaluate the student-created poem. I allow lots of class time for students to locate poems (primarily using a simple search engine) so that I can work with them one-on-one.
