This project is a favorite of mine for working with high-school students. It combines Art history/American history with critical thinking skills and fundamental painting practices.
Students first research a presidential portrait and the artist responsible for it. This project asks the students to consider the artist's style and describe the work using artistic language.
Later students paint their own self portraits but must try to emulate the original artist's style and the mood within the portrait.
I find that this project is just structured enough, that it doesn't overwhelm young artists while still leaving a lot of room for creativity and personal expression.
