"My Reading Life Memoir" is one of my favorite assignments from my 12th grade AP Literature course, but I believe that it can be applied to classes of any level. It asks the kids to write about their experiences with books, with reading, with imaginative play based on that reading, and more. I even encourage kids who don't like reading, or didn't like reading a particular book (one assigned in class, perhaps, or forced upon them by a well-meaning aunt!) to chronicle their frustrations with humor and detail.
I assign this project at the beginning of the year, and ask students to bring in a completed rough draft for peer review. This writing experience helps us all learn about each other. Many of the memoirs have been used as the basis for a college essay. We discuss ways to organize the piece, and look at what other writers have remarked about their own reading experiences.
