This product contains a poster and a set of bookmarks for a “Reading Toolbox” that helps learners remember different reading strategies that they can use for unfamiliar words. In the classroom, I have used a play toolbox with all of these tools to create a concrete reminder for students as well. We added 1-2 tools each week during guided reading during the first quarter of the year. The students absolutely loved using their “tools,” and they used them all year long!
The poster makes a handy reference chart that can be posted in a library center or at your guided reading table. It can also be laminated and taken along for mobile guided reading.
The bookmarks can be printed (and laminated, if you wish) for students to use independently. In the past, I have sent a letter home to families explaining the toolbox strategies and how they can use the same “tools” to help their readers at home. I have included a basic letter that can be printed and signed or used as inspiration for your own letter.
