My (real-life) Math Journal contains one real-life situation math word problem per day. Math strategies include: 5 steps- 1.pictorial/sketch representation or visualization of what the word problem entails (I usually draw counters in groups of 5 and use two different colored crayons to represent the two parts of the word problem). 2. 100's Chart visual representation. 3. Part-Part Whole Mat representation (counters and/or numbers can be drawn in this section). 4. Number Sentence (I use a pencil first to write the numbers, then have students trace and color code the numbers to represent both parts of the word problem). 5. Number Line (I also use a pencil first to represent the numbers on the number line, then trace the "leaps" with the two colors I chose to represent the two parts of the story).
