Common Core Standards:
K.P.2.1 Classify objects by observable physical properties (including size, color, shape, texture, weight and flexibility).
K.P.2.2 Compare the observable physical properties of different kinds of materials (clay, wood, cloth, paper, etc) from which objects are made and how they are used.
For this lesson, first we read about rocks and their uses. Then we discussed the vocabulary for describing rocks. We discussed the different physical properties. Finally, students brought rocks from home to explore. We had a magnifying glass station, a weighing station, a magnet station, a Unifix cube station, and a station where they could use a golf tee to scratch their rock to see if it was hard or soft, and a sheet of white butcher paper to scratch their rock on to see if it “wrote.” Students wrote in their flip books as they visited each station.
