This is a project you can use anytime while reading the Scarlet Letter. I am using it during the middle of the reading of the novel to break up the monotony as well as break to provide a writing exercise to break up chapter quizzes/tests.
Students will choose a bad habit and create their own "Scarlet Letter" representing their bad habit as well as writing an essay that explains the bad habit (they can also add how they plan to break it, how it affects others, how it started, etc.). Students must decorate a letter, much like Hester Prynne's A to represent their bad habit.
