Special Interest Areas (SIA) are one of the defining characteristics of Autism Spectrum disorders. Individuals get really into (sometimes obsessed) one or more topics. The SIA can be really beneficial because students are very motivated to engage in their SIA. Although I recommend all teachers use SIAs to your advantage and integrate them into all content areas, there will be times that this does not happen.
There are times when the SIA needs to be paused so other learning can take place.
