I created this organizer for the end of our Fiction Unit, when students are required to write their own story conveying a specific theme. I included one page of universal themes, but you could also have students brainstorm their own themes.
You can also use this as a differentiation tool; my higher level students enjoy rising to the challenge of coming up with an original theme.
It helps my lower level students write with purpose. It also requires them to consider placing purposeful foreshadowing and descriptive details into their stories.
I am trying to provide easy supplemental materials that can go with different units throughout the year. You could also challenge students to use the same theme, to wrap up a specific thematic unit.
This year, I had students read their stories aloud. The class then had to guess the theme, until someone got it spot on! They really enjoyed this.
Thanks for visiting Ms. Eddington in the Middle!
