Students use this mat to play a basic number sense game using snap cubes to build towers. I find that with the structure of the work mat students are more engaged and organized as they play.
First students put a number card on the 'my tower has' box and build a snap cube tower with that many cubes. They place their tower in the My Tower spot.
Then students turn over another card and place in the 'Change to' box. Students must change their tower to reflect the new quantity. They are not building a new tower. Encourage students to talk through the process. For example:
"My tower has 6. Change to 3. I need to take off 3 cubes."
Students then move their number card over to the 'my tower has' box and start the process over again.
This game encourages students to compare numbers as they add/remove counters. It also builds number sense as students make connections between quantities that they have to add or remove as they change their tower. My kids are much more successful and focused at this game when they use the workmat! It has become one of their favorites!
