As students find words they want to know in the books they read, I have them add them to their list of their "Very Own Words." In this manner, I can tell at a glance IF they're reading at home and if they're reading for meaning or just turning pages. I can also quickly assess the difficulty of the books they're reading independently based on the quality of the words students are mining from them. This sheet works as a reading log for me, giving me the ability to have conversations with my students about the degree to which they're fulfilling my expectations about their home reading, and as a Word Wall for my students, allowing them to use their Very Own Words as they shift into Writers' Workshop. The sheet can easily be printed multiply to make a packet, but I usually print and then photocopy at 85% so that I can trim it to 7"x9" to glue into their Reader's Notebooks.
