The book has 12 winter focus words (and several sight words) for kids to practice on half sheets that are to made into a "book". There are two "cloze" sentences on each half sheet page that students are to write the given word in blanks to complete. I consider this little book to be a confidence-builder for reluctant primary readers.
My thinking is that students with reading levels RB to level C would enjoy this book and find it helpful. These are students who do not usually have sentence writing confidence. I included picture support to help, so that after the blanks are filled in, reluctant students can have a way to identify the pictures even if they are unsure of how to decode the words. Also included are 12 word cards with the graphics to match the pages in the "book".
I plan to use this with my newest ELL students who have very limited English. Once they understand the direction is to write the bold words in the blanks, it's an independent activity even for students with limited English. Later, students can be guided to read through the reader with help from peers or teachers.
I like the idea of having students keep books like this in a bag in their desks to revisit once they have been successful with writing the words and reading the sentences with help. Even those students who end up memorizing the pages, will eventually pick up new words after many exposures.
