Student reading and writing is critical to our emergent learners. This package is designed ideally for kindergarten to Grade 1 students. This was designed to be a take-home activity to include families in the child’s learning and as a way to help differentiate learning for each student. Students use these handouts as a fun and interactive way to learn sight words. Students take home their handout and colour in the words that they can identify on their own. Unknown words are then identified to parents and teachers and are used as a basis for learning. This eliminates the need to practice words students already know. Once students master one Word-A-Pillar, they receive the next and so on and so forth. This has motivated my learners to continue practicing their sight words each day. Each handout contains sight words in order of frequency. This means that they will encounter words they will most commonly see and use in their reading and writing. There are multiple ways that you can extend the use of Word-A-Pillars in your everyday literacy program. Students can use them as a resource in the classroom, they can use them in literacy games and centres etc. You can formulate homogenous literacy groups based on Word-A-Pillar words. How you use the Word-A-Pillar information for your planning needs is up to you. I have used this process year after year for multiple students at different ranges. I hope your students will love these as much as my students have!
