My worrisome school day
A lesson in working through anxiety
By Michelle Patch
My tummy hurts.
My headache starts.
My breathing gets all tight.
My hands get sweaty.
My mouth goes dry.
I know I’m not alright.
I tell my mom “I think I’m sick! I can’t go to school today!”
I try to climb back into bed and wish the day away.
Mom gets me up and helps me dress and get ready for the bus.
‘You need to go, it will be alright, please don’t make such a fuss.”
The tears are coming- I feel them there oh please no not today.
Then Mom takes my hands, looks at me and says “let’s breathe them all away.”
We breathe in deep right through our noses and hold ’til the count of 5.
Then slowly blow out through our mouths and gently close our eyes.
We go again and then once more and I keep the tears at bay.
Maybe just maybe school won’t be so tough today.
