Help your students to create interesting mystery stories which truly fit the genre. The organizer that I have provided will help your students to decide on a setting, clues, a motive, and characters for their mystery. You will need to prepare "Mystery Bags" for each small group. In each bag, place 5-6 different items to get the students thinking and talking about how the items could be clues in a mystery. Possible items for the bags could include: a key, a receipt, a birthday candle, fake money, a piece of chain, a broken lock, glasses, a bandage, and/or old jewelry. Be creative and use what you find lying around the house. It's also fun to have the bags centered around a theme, such as a sports bag, a lunch bag, a gift bag, etc. Then the students can get ideas for writing from the bag itself. Once students have completed the Mystery Bag planning sheet they are ready to start writing!
