This is a GREAT way to allow students to figure out that all three methods for measuring Volume-- all find the space the object takes up and the amount it holds inside-- and that they are the SAME! They will even discover that a cubic centimeter and a milliliter are equal to one another! All you have to do is gather some recycled containers from super small, such as a pen cap to large, such as an OJ bottle-- and let the students do the rest--DISCOVER VOLUME! They will test the Mystery Containers by Regular method, or lxwxh=V in cubic centimeters; by Liquid Volume, or filling the containers with water and measuring that water in a graduated cylinder in milliliters(mL) and then, by Displacement, or EndV--StartV= V of Object in milliliters(mL) and make comparisons and find the actual differences. As my ActionLABs are ALWAYS in Scientific Method, they will then, report Results from stems and draw conclusions from questions and response prompts. They will finally create a GRAPH of their Mystery Containers' Volumes. This LAB uses the brain-based research that shows COMPARING measurements and concepts stays in student's memory better and for longer:)
