Students draw the scrambled image using the grid coordinates. Scrambled grids ensure that student's attention is focused on what they are doing and not distracted by the overall image.
As a right-brained drawing technique, mystery grids are particularly suited to addressing left-mode issues. The original image is intentionally scrambled to deny the left-brain access and facilitate a shift to a more beneficial mode of mental processing.
Grid drawing isn't just for art class. The process is very effective at teaching itself while addressing certain math concepts. Non-english speaking students can often discern the method and get to work right away.
