If you're teaching about long and short vowels (specifically with "magic e"), this is such a fun activity!
Prep: Print enough copies of the first two sheets for all students, and print the third sheet (spinners) on card stock. Then use a white crayon to write the letter e in all the white boxes, and the game is ready!
Students can use paper clips and pencils to spin the spinners. They write short vowel (CVC) words in the purple boxes, and shade the white boxes with a marker to reveal the mystery long vowel word. I like to also quickly assess students' reading of long/short vowel (CVC/CVCe) words by having them read the words they write out loud, and I ask them which words are real and which are nonsense.
Students love this activity because they get to make up their own words and discover the mystery!
