This is a problem-based five lesson mini-unit that focuses on the 3rd grade VSOLs of learning about animals, ecosystems, and habitats. In this unit, students are tasked with the problem of a group of animals running amok in a residential neighborhood. In order to solve this problem, students complete critical thinking activities, like the food-chain game and observing outdoor habitats. Additionally, vocabulary cards are included to support language arts SOLs. The culminating activity for students is designing and creating a bear-proof bird-feeder. Some of the components can be adapted and used in other grades as well. For example, I modified the food chain game for a 5th grade class when I was teaching ocean ecosystems. To further support learning, language arts, social studies have been included. All materials that have been adapted or modified have citation.
