What a sweet treat! Children will fall in love with this math activity that gets them to count objects, recognize numbers, and make a choice, all in this Valentine’s Day themed pocket chart. First children find their names on the carpet or in a basket if you prefer. Blank name cards are included with this purchase. Next each child finds the counting card in the top (middle) slot of the pocket chart and begins counting all the objects seen. Then the children read the two number choices provided. The children make a choice, deciding which number matches the quantity counted, and places their name cards on the side of their chosen answer. You will need a pocket chart divided down the middle with masking tape. Start dividing chart about the 3rd pocket from the top to the bottom. This game is most fun during small group transitional times such bathroom break, early finishers, morning arrivals, and before dismissal. The correct answer can quickly be reviewed by the teacher during morning meeting or closing group. Having a number line or calendar near by can help children struggling with number recognition. After counting the objects card, they can touch and count on the calendar until they get to the specific number they are looking for. Viola! There is the number that they need to choose. Students struggling with one-to-one correspondence can ask a friend for help and count together. Little ones who need a challenge can use some to the blank counting cards to create their own counting cards for their classmates to count and solve. I call these children Mystery Leaders and they love it! Everyone can have fun with this game!
