Students practise the skill of rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred or tenth depending on their level of ability and colour the picture according to the key. There are 3 different pictures and each picture comes with 3 differentiated levels – beginning, consolidating and extension, allowing students to work at their appropriate level.
BEGINNER – rounding to the nearest ten
CONSOLIDATING – rounding to the nearest hundred
EXTENSION – rounding to the nearest tenth
I have used mystery pictures as a pre-assessment and/or post-assessment at the beginning and/or conclusion of a unit of work to assess students’ understanding. I also use them as an early finisher task, as a way to practise a skill, as something different for homework or a maths warm up.
While helpful in the classroom, this set can also be a useful and fun way for tutors or parents to help their children improve their ability to round numbers.
