This activity was created to have students work together in pairs or small groups to work on problems dealing with number sense. It is useful for math intervention or review at many grade levels.
The pairs or groups work on one task at a time. Each task has typically 3 or 4 questions or problems. The students answer the questions or solve the problems as a group and present their results to the teacher. If they are correct, their group can sign up for a mystery prize.
Several mystery prizes are hidden in envelopes and taped to the board. The prizes may be candy, extra credit, free homework assignment, etc. If the group is incorrect, the group goes back to work on the problems.
After all of the mystery prizes are spoken for, another group can complete a task card correctly and overwrite a signature on a mystery prize.
